The J-1 Cultural Exchange Program is more than just an opportunity for international visitors—it’s a powerful initiative that strengthens American businesses, enriches our communities, and fosters lasting international relationships. By welcoming J-1 participants, we enhance our workforce, celebrate cultural diversity, and create meaningful global connections that benefit Cape Cod and the entire United States.
From the bustling tourism industry of Cape Cod to vibrant city centers, J-1 participants play a crucial role in keeping businesses running efficiently, especially during peak seasons.
The J-1 program brings the world to our doorstep, enhancing the cultural landscape of Cape Cod and promoting a more inclusive society.
In today’s interconnected world, cultural competence and global awareness are critical for success. The J-1 program helps Americans develop these essential skills.
Cultural exchange plays a vital role in fostering strong international partnerships and promoting goodwill.
Cape Cod’s thriving tourism and hospitality industries rely on J-1 participants to keep operations running smoothly during the busy summer season. In addition to supporting local businesses, J-1 students bring energy, enthusiasm, and cultural diversity to our communities, making the Cape an even more vibrant and welcoming destination.
Each summer, J-1 Cultural Exchange students travel to Cape Cod to work and experience American culture firsthand. Many of these students need safe, affordable housing near their workplaces, and local hosts play a crucial role in making their experience a success.
Hosting a J-1 student is a rewarding experience that fosters cross-cultural exchange, lifelong friendships, and meaningful connections. Many hosts find it enriching to learn about different cultures, and some even stay in touch with their students for years after their stay.
Unlike in past years, J-1 sponsoring agencies such as CIEE and InterExchange do not have dedicated staff to assist with host placements. Instead, we encourage hosts to connect directly with students through the Hello Summer J1 Cape Cod Facebook Group, a popular resource where students seek housing in the region.
Within 5 miles of the student’s workplace
Finished basement rooms must have a walk-out exit
Most hosts charge around $150 per student per week, and students are responsible for their own meals and groceries. Some hosts enjoy occasional shared meals, fostering even deeper cultural exchange.
If you’re interested in hosting, we recommend:
Joining the Hello Summer J1 Cape Cod Facebook Group to list available housing
Connecting with local employers to see if they have housing leads for their J-1 employees
Setting clear expectations with students upon arrival regarding cleanliness, house rules, and any deposits
While we are unable to coordinate housing placements directly, we appreciate your support in making Cape Cod a welcoming place for J-1 students.
For concerns related to student welfare, always refer to the student's sponsoring agency, which provides 24/7 support. For serious health or safety issues, contact the U.S. State Department J-1 Visa Hotline at 1-866-283-9090 or jvisas@state.gov.
Thank you for helping build a stronger, more connected world—one exchange at a time!
