The Cape and Islands enjoy a rich history created by people of color from the region. Many journeyed from across the ocean, and once here, continued journeys of another kind. We see the extraordinary roles and contributions of people of color spanning the eras of the slave trade, abolitionism, and more recently, the civil rights movement. People of color have been the backbone of the whaling and cranberry industries over the centuries. African-Americans, Cape Verdeans, and other people of color helped shape the Cape Cod of today. Beautiful florals and still life's. Stirring landscapes. All executed with a unique dimensional quality unlike any other style of painting. This is the work of Cape Cod artist Stephen Roth, a celebrated practitioner of the art of palette knife painting. Eschewing traditional brushes in favor of the sharp edge of a palette knife, Stephen brings a distinctive style and remarkable depth to his work. This little known “wet into wet” technique results in bold strokes, appealing textures and vibrant colors.
Traditions play a big role in the development of any social organization. While many WDYC traditions have come and gone, many still remain. Harkening to the days when the club closed for the winter months, the Commissioning is held on Memorial Day weekend to mark the beginning of the summer season and typically features dinner and dancing. The Commodore’s Ball, typically Labor Day weekend, marks the passing of the flags to the new officers of the club for the coming year. This event is also normally marked by a dining and social event.
