Marine Biological Laboratory

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is dedicated to scientific discovery – exploring fundamental biology, understanding biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education. Our blend of research and education has been transformative for generations of biologists since 1888, when the first students and faculty arrived at the lab in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Many of the world’s leading scientists have worked or studied here, and 57 scientists affiliated with the MBL have been recognized with Nobel Prizes. Summertime tours include a visit to the Marine Resources Center for a look at the marine animals housed at MBL and a walking tour of the campus.
