Explore Sampsons Island by Kayak
On a breezy summer day, Nantucket sound is ablaze with sunlight and whitecaps. As the tide courses out around Sampsons Island, the placid waters of Cotuit Bay come to life as well. High overhead, a lone osprey dips down low as it spies an unwary scup that has lingered too long in the shallows. With an effortless dive, it drops into the water but returns empty-taloned. Its prey has cheated death and returned to the sanctuary of deeper water. As your kayak glides along, it is impossible to not be aware if the life that abounds in this protected area.
Our kayaks will glide past Mass Audubon's Sampsons Island Wildlife Sanctuary (important nesting habitat to least terns, piping plovers and common terns) and learn about Mass Audubon’s Coastal Water Bird program’s work to protect these important habitats. Depending on the tide and conditions, part of the trip may include a tidal pool exploration that reveals different crustacean, mollusk and fish species.
