Winslow Lewis and the US Lighthouse Establishment

October 2, 2022
  • Details

In the early 19th century, Wellfleet native Winslow Lewis wielded significant power in the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment. Neither an engineer nor scientist, Lewis was rather a contractor whose designs prioritized budget over function—with sometimes disastrous results. Join Curator Emily Sullivan for this free Zoom lecture to hear how the issues within the Lighthouse Establishment led to the U.S. Lighthouse Board, and the professionalization of the nation’s lighthouse service. Please note that this is an online-only event that requires pre-registration. See our website to register.

Emily Sullivan joined CCMM as Curator in February of 2022. Emily has a BA from Boston University in History, and an MA from American University in Public History. She has served as Historian at the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and at History Associates, Inc., of Rockville, Maryland.
