Talk of the Town Lecture Series

WILLIAM WOOD: Adventurer, Author and Sandwich Ancestor - Ann Shea

History identifies William Wood as one of the Ten Men of Saugus, the original founds of the town of  Sandwich, Massachusetts.  Records show that William Wood Sailed aboard the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s Higginson fleet from England along with governor John Winthrop and 750 others on May 1, 1629, arriving in Salem, Massachusetts in June.  It appears Wood’s intentions was to write a sort of travel brochure, a compendium of facts and impressions about New England’s geography, botany, biology and anthropology that Englishmen might find useful to know before moving to a foreign place.  New England Prospects was published in 1634 and did just that.

Join historian and author Ann Shea as she chronicles William Wood’s odyssey – from England to Saugus as well as stories of his daughter, and historian theories about Wood’s role in Sandwich, Massachusetts. This lecture will be held at the Sandwich Glass.  Doors open at 6:30pm. Admission is FREE.  Seats are available on a first come, first serve basis.
