The Best New Dining on Cape Cod
The past year or so has brought some exciting new additions to the Cape’s dining (and drinking) scene. Here are a few of our favorites to put on your radar!
Fans of the Anejo Mexican Bistro in Falmouth were lining up this past summer to try its new location in downtown Hyannis. Anejo elevates casual Mexican cuisine to a bistro experience, with guacamole made tableside, noteworthy slow-roasted pork carnitas, and fusion dishes (like lobster taquitos) that incorporate local seafood. The margaritas are made with fresh ingredients, and there's a long list of tequila and mezcal to sip on or enjoy in one of their house cocktails. In season, Anejo's outdoor patio is perfect for enjoying happy hour; also check out the Beech Tree Taqueria out back.
Casual food with a contemporary flare is what you’ll find at the Cleat & Anchor in Dennis Port, where the house favorites include their No-So Chicken Wings (mini pork shanks) and chicken-fried fish & chips. Their rotating draft selection features local craft beers, and the restaurant’s fun vibe is one of its biggest draws (live local bands perform here often).
Don't look past the renovated railroad car that houses Epic Oyster in North Falmouth. The small bar and seating area is absolutely hopping most nights, and you should expect a line out the door during summer months. The oyster selection changes daily, depending on the catch, as does the dinner menu, featuring Portuguese-influenced cuisine. Expect seasonal small plates, entrees that range from seafood stew to their signature rice bowls, and traditional sides with a twist. There's plenty of beer on tap, and a carefully curated wine selection.
When you're craving a burger, the Next Door Burger Bar in Sandwich delivers. Step inside the lovely pink Victorian into a modern and chic eatery. The gourmet burgers are thick and juicy, and served on locally made brioche buns. Bite into several classic varieties, including an extra spicy version with ghost pepper jam or a pork burger styled like a Vietnamese Bahn Mi (there are vegetarian options too). Be sure to also indulge in one of their spiked housemade milkshakes – you won’t regret it.
Murphy’s on Main in Hyannis serves up casual pub fare with an Irish accent in a neighborhood tavern setting. Choose from classic chicken wings and fried pickles for an appetizer, or save room for giant patty melts and generous portions of shepherd's pie or short ribs as an entree. Cheer on the Red Sox at the full bar, and check the calendar for nightly entertainment including local bands, music bingo and karaoke.
The Pheasant in Dennis re-opened in 2018 under new owners with a bright and inviting dining room in its historic farmhouse location. The farm-to-table eatery places an emphasis on classic New England flavors and seasonally-driven ingredients. The Cape Cod Bay Mussels - steamed with chouriço, herbs and Devil’s Purse Brewery’s Handline Kolsch - is a house favorite.
Ten Pin Eatery is Hyannis is family dining at its finest, appealing to adults almost as much as it does to kids. This state-of-the-art entertainment complex at Cape Cod Mall – developed by Ryan Family Amusements and Chapin’s Restaurant - features 11 lanes of bowling, laser tag, 50+ arcade games and a menu that includes wings, flatbreads and their signature burgers. Those who are 21+ can watch the Pats play or enjoy live music at the full-service bar.
Chart Room at Crosby’s in Osterville is the relatively new sister restaurant to the longtime Cataumet location. The newest location (open seasonally) maintains the same lively harborside vibe that made the original Chart Room a landmark. The menu is heavy on fresh seafood, along with salads and the popular lobster mac & cheese. Enjoy a range of cocktails, from light and breezy options that are perfect for sipping in summer to craft cocktails that warm you on a cool fall day.
Over in Mashpee, Naukabout Beer Company is brewing up hop-forward beers in small batches. Fans rave about the IPA and pale ale, and clamor for the seasonal Nauktoberfest each fall. The warm and inviting brewery is open Wednesday-Sunday, and food trucks line up during peak times to supply the snacks. Take a seat in the rustic taproom, or enjoy the 4,000 square foot patio overlooking Naukabout’s wooded, lakeside location.
You can hear the ocean waves lapping the shore at Soprano’s Casino by the Sea in Falmouth Heights, where large windows provide gorgeous views of Vineyard Sound – and a seasonal open air deck gets you even closer to the water. Offering classic Italian fare, Sopranos excels at favorites like rolled eggplant, bucatini Bolognese, linguini and fresh clams, and a range of surf and turf dishes; they’ve had plenty of time to perfect their recipes at their first location in Mashpee’s South Cape Village.
Sometimes you want a decadent burger, other times it's delicately prepared cod you crave. Grill 43 in Yarmouthport offers up both along with a range of other gourmet comfort foods, including wood-fired pizza and seasonal entrees like crispy salmon with creamy polenta. It follows the reputation for stellar food set by its sister restaurant, Rock Harbor Grill in Orleans.
The Flats Restaurant in Brewster is an airy and modern take on coastal dining. The menu is full of fresh seafood, locally sourced produce, and changes seasonally. Choose from raw bar starters, and a variety of chicken, vegetarian and wild game dishes, in addition to favorites like local lobster. There's always a handmade pasta on the menu, and the desserts are made in-house. Ask to see the ever-changing drink menu for creative cocktails made with house infusions, such as the Strawberry Basil Bourbon Lemonade and Sparkling Shiraz Cosmo.
The Drunken Seal in Sandwich delivers beach shack favorites like lobster rolls and chowder in an oceanfront restaurant with gorgeous sea views. The casual yet refined dining room overlooks Cape Cod Bay and is the perfect place for a post-beach snack or dinner. The coastal-inspired menu ranges from sesame crusted ahi tuna, a traditional lobster boil, gourmet sandwiches, flatbreads and raw bar options straight from the sea.
