Welcoming nearly 45,000 visitors in previous years to more than two hundred annual programs, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is a nationally recognized, year-round cultural institution that fuses the creative energy of America’s oldest active art colony with the natural beauty of outer Cape Cod that has inspired artists for generations. Integral to the community comprising the Provincetown Art Colony, PAAM embodies the qualities that make Provincetown an enduring American center for the arts, and serves as Cape Cod’s most widely-attended art museum.
As interest in the region’s contribution to American art history continues to grow, PAAM presents an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions, lectures, classes and cultural events that seek to promote and cultivate appreciation for all branches of the fine arts for which Provincetown is known.
PAAM maintains a collection of nearly 3,000 pieces of fine American artwork, representing more than 600 artists who have been inspired by the Provincetown Art Colony such as Robert Motherwell, Hans Hoffman, Charles Hawthorne, John Singer-Sargent, Edwin Dickinson, and Blanche Lazzell, to name a few. This collection provides the nexus for the full range of exhibitions the organization mounts throughout the year.
The Lillian Orlowsky/William Freed Museum School at PAAM offers vital community education, outreach programs, and more than 70 year-round art workshops led by gifted teaching-artists. Programs honor Provincetown’s century-long tradition of fine art instruction, a practice brought to Provincetown in 1899 by PAAM founder, Charles Hawthorne.
A renovation and expansion, completed in 2005, made PAAM the first “green” art museum in the country, certified by the U.S. Green Buildings Council with a Silver LEED rating. PAAM’s new LEED-certified green facility ensures that the environment is treated with the same care and protection as the artworks entrusted to the organization.
Currently, PAAM maintains accreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM), the highest professional endorsement bestowed on premier museums in the United States, indicating adherence to the highest standards of accountability and best museum practices. Facilities maintained to comply with the highest museum standards encourage other nationally recognized museums and private collectors to loan works to PAAM with confidence.
