Gateway to Cape Cod

When you arrive on Cape Cod via the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge, you are crossing the widest canal in the world built at sea level. The Cape Cod Canal was designed to avoid treacherous travel around the outer Cape and dangerous Nantucket shoals. Bourne became popular with wealthy people in the late 19th century, and was the summer retreat for President Grover Cleveland. Picturesque Falmouth is home to the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and is a departure point for ferries to Martha’s Vineyard. Mashpee’s Native American heritage is still strong as evidenced by the annual Wampanoag Pow Wow held in July. The oldest town on Cape Cod, Sandwich’s heritage is preserved in the Hoxie House and its many historic sites.
